Measles Outbreak

Dear Parents,

Re: Current measles outbreak in Surrey and Sussex and the importance of MMR vaccination for children and young adults.

We have been advised by Public Health England that there is a significant measles outbreak across Surrey and Sussex. There are over 130 cases (confirmed and suspected) and some have been ill enough to need hospitalisation. Cases have occurred in all age groups up to 60, although the highest number of cases is in the 20 to 39 years age group.

Public Health England have asked us to raise awareness around the current measles outbreak, highlighting the importance for parents to check their children’s MMR vaccination status and encouraging parents to contact their GP for an appointment if their child is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. All children by the age of 5 should have received 2 doses of MMR.

If children are not fully vaccinated, it is never too late to get them immunised. There is no upper age limit to offering MMR.

Children are more susceptible to infectious diseases for a number of reasons including immature immunity, lack of prior exposure to infections and incomplete vaccinations. Social and environmental factors also play a part in children’s vulnerability and the spread of infections. Schools can be the ideal setting for transmission of infections as they provide an opportunity for a high degree of close contact and sharing of communal facilities.

We are also attaching a leaflet with more detailed information about Measles and immunisation.
